GUIDE TO TAXES ON RETIREES 2009-2010: GEORGIA

The Peach State is a peachy tax environment for retirees.  Social Security benefits are exempt and so are most types of retirement income—including pensions, annuities, rental income and investment income—up to $35,000 per person for residents 62 and older.  Retirement income above the excluded amount is taxed at ordinary rates, which top out at 6%.  Food and prescription drugs are exempt.  Real estate taxes may include a combination of county, city, school and state taxes, depending on location.  Full-time residents qualify for a homestead exemption of up to 40% of the fair market value of their house, and residents 65 and older may qualify for additional deductions.

State Sales Tax—4% (food and prescription drugs exempt).  But local taxes may add an additional 4%.

     Income Tax Range—1% - 6%.

GOLF COURSE NEWS

The Oak Grove Island Golf & Country Club management sent us the following note:

The summer rain has really made a difference to the course this year.  The fairways and greens are lush with grass and, subsequently, kept everyone busy keeping the grass under control. Our new roller has been a great success and has really taken our greens to the next level.  Thank you to everyone who participated in our Grand Draw for the roller.

Our new fleet of golf carts arrived on the 3rd of September.  These are the latest new model from Club Car and will be a great benefit to the course for the next few years.  Come in and give them a try.

We are moving quickly into the holiday season.  Our bookings for parties and functions in the Bistro is up from last year, which is a good sign. It is a great venue for any holiday get together.  Please keep us in mind if you are planning on having a party.

The pro shop has some great deals on merchandise and currently has a new program to attract new members.  Call the pro shop for more details.

Sign up for our “E-club” on our website.   This has some great offers open only to “E-club” members, plus you get a FREE round of golf on your birthday.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

CRUISING NEWS

This year’s annual trip with Mary’s sister and her husband took us to the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe.

We spent three days in Rotterdam, Netherlands prior to bordering the Holland America Line M/S Rotterdam for twelve days.  Rotterdam is the largest seaport in Europe, easily understood when one takes a sightseeing boat cruise around the massive harbor.  Thousands of containers are being unloaded off dozens of container ships at any given time.

While on the ship, we made the most memorable cruise we have ever been on, stopping in Oslo, Norway; Arhus, Denmark; Warnemunde (Berlin), Germany; Tallinn, Estonia; St. Petersburg, Russia; Helsinki, Finland; Stockholm, Sweden; and ending in Copenhagen, Denmark, where we stayed for three days.

Boating was very popular in all of the countries except Russia.  Due to high fuel costs, sailboats were in abundance.  The most unbelievable exhibit we saw on the trip was in Stockholm.  In 1628 A.D., a great new Swedish warship, VASA, keeled over and sank in the Stockholm harbor on her maiden voyage.  333 years later, the ship was raised and now rests in a magnificent museum, along with thousands of artifacts found with her.

Although most countries were very prosperous, bicycles were a main source of individual transportation in the cities.  They were everywhere and contributed to a very fit population.

The most interesting cities, in our opinion, were St. Petersburg and Berlin where reconstruction since World War II and the subsequent fall of communism has been awesome.  History and opulence was prevalent in museums, churches and monuments.

We didn’t see many Americans this year apparently due to the weaker dollar versus the Euro.

It was nice getting back to Oak Grove Island.  One realizes how fortunate we are in America after visiting other places in the world for a few weeks.
